China Egg Fortnightly Report: Prices rise steadily amid fall in production volume in recent weeks (May 20, 2005)
An eFeedLink exclusive report
Egg prices in China have risen steadily in the past month, registering increases between RMB0.3 and RMB1 in most regions.
Prices of eggs traditionally edged higher in the period prior to and after the Dragon Boat Festival which normally fall in mid-June period. This year, however, egg prices began their climb much earlier and rises were also sharper compared with the previous year.
Analysts attributed the price increase to the following:
- Farmers who delayed the slaughtering of their layers in the earlier period to increase egg production have reached the peak season to replace their layer inventory. This has caused egg production volume to fall in recent weeks.
- With the approach of warmer weather conditions, most farmers have started vaccinating their layers against livestock diseases, similarly resulting in a decline in egg production.
Egg prices in China were expected to continue moving in an upward course in the coming weeks.
