Russia: 6,780 pigs susceptible after FMD outbreak
A foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreak in Primorskiy Kray (Prokhory, Spassky), Russia, had left 6,780 pigs susceptible, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) reported.
The source of the information was from Dr. Evgeny Nepoklonov, Deputy Head, Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance, Ministry of Agriculture, Moscow, Russia.
The date of the start of the event was May 17, 2014, which was more than two years after the previous occurrence of FMD in April 2012.
With 4,070 infected cases, and the apparent morbidity rate was 60.03%, with no fatalities occurring. Control measures applied included quarantine, movement control within the country, screening and disinfection of infected premises. Vaccination in response to the outbreak will also be carried out.
However, the origin of infection was unknown or inconclusive. As the event is still continuing, weekly follow-up reports of the outbreak will be submitted.
