Russia considering banning use of frozen meat

Russia is considering banning the use of frozen meat to produce meat products but the ban could severely affect imports and the meat industry.

Russia imports about 30 percent of the beef and pork and 40 percent of poultry meat that it consumes, the majority of which comes in frozen form. Russia's main importers are the EU, the US, Brazil and Argentina.

The proposal was put forward by consumer rights agency Rospotrebnadzor and the ministry of Justice is currently looking at the plan to see whether it is feasible.

"The order will become effective if the ministry finds out it does not contradict the legislation and endorses it," a spokesperson said.
