Indian state governor calls for more research to improve economic sustainability of aquaculture
Sheila Dikshit, the governor of Kerala, India, has called for increased research activities to improve the ecological and economic sustainability of local fish and shrimp aquaculture, The Hindu Business Line reported.
Low-cost farming system affordable to farmers needs to be developed to exploit the high prospects of fisheries in the state, she said.
She highlighted the threat of global warming towards biodiversity and fisheries, claiming that evidences are now available concerning the rise of sea surface temperature, change in ocean productivity and community structure, ocean acidification, sea level rise, and change in the time and success of spawning.
Research on disease diagnosis, surveillance and management of aquatic organisms also need to be improved in order to control viral and bacterial attacks in Kerala's shrimp farms, Dikshit added.
