China's northeastern corn acreage widens this year

Corn acreage in the major producing provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning is higher this year, and farmers have largely completed sowing, according to reports Thursday (May 19).

Heilongjiang's corn acreage is up more than 10% from last year as many farmers shifted from soy to corn, while planting area in Jilin may rise 3%-5%, said China Corn Network, which tracks the cash market and is surveying corn planting in major areas.

Corn acreage in Liaoning will likely be flat, it added.

Combined corn output in the three provinces accounts for about 29% of the nation's total, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
