Russia May grain exports seen down

Russian grain exports are seen to fall in May and June from 2.16 million tonnes in April as deliveries of wheat to Egypt may dwindle after the seizure of two shipments and a halt of imports by Turkey, according to SovEcon.

However exports in the whole of the current crop year, which ends on June 30, may reach an all-time high of 22 million tonnes. Wheat exports including flour in grain equivalent may reach 18 million tonnes.

Wheat exports slipped to 1.48 million tonnes last month from 1.69 million in March, while corn exports fell to 210,000 tonnes from 280,000. But barley exports rose to 473,400 tonnes due to a decline in feed grain prices in Russia.

Egypt and Turkey were top buyers of Russian wheat in April.

But the seizure of two shipments of Russian wheat suspected to be unfit for human consumption may lead to a temporary import decline while Turkey has announced a halt in wheat imports in 2009.
