Japan's Daiei to resume sales of National Beef products

Japanese supermarket chain Daiei Inc announced it will resume sales of beef from US-based National Beef Packing Co. next month.

This follows Tokyo's recent suspension on beef imports from National Beef's Brawley, California plant after quarantine inspectors found in a shipment a portion of vertebral column, a specified risk material associated with BSE.

Daiei immediately removed National Beef products from its shelves after the incident.

The company said it will not import beef from the Brawley plant, but will source from two National Beef facilities after having conducted inspections to confirm their safety.

Sales will resume June 5 with all 333 Daiei-owned outlets selling five types of beef product from National Beef.
