Australian beef is safe from foot-and-mouth disease

The latest outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Japan poses no risk to the Australian beef industry or to the buying consumers, according to Australian producers.

The outbreak has forced the killing of more than 100,000 pigs and cows since being detected in southern Japan on April 20.

But Australia is in the clear given it does not import any Wagyu beef from Japan, according to reports by Meat and Livestock Australia.

If there is any fallout, it is likely to come in the form of extra demand for Australian beef in Japan, the reports added.

The disease can only be transmitted through live animals, uncooked meat and unprocessed dairy products. It does not affect humans.
