China's 2012 corn output to climb 3%

During the current calendar year, China's corn harvest is expected to increase by 3%, compared with 2011, to 197.5 million tonnes, China National Grain and Oils Information Center said on Wednesday (May 16).

The total corn production globally is expected to touch 34.3 million hectares in 2012, a rise of 2.6% against 2011.

However, it is still quite early to estimate the size of the harvest that needs to get through the coming few months of a critical growing period.

Meanwhile, corn imports in the country are expected to surge by about 60% in the year to September 2013 which turn will make it the fourth largest buyer in the world.

US, China and Brazil are the top three corn producing countries in the world while the prominent exporters are US, Argentina and Brazil. The chief importers are Japan, EU, Malaysia, Taiwan, Indonesia etc.
