Ukraine May 1 grain stocks 10.7 million tonnes, up 25 percent on-year
Grain stocks in Ukraine on May 1 totalled 10.7 million tonnes, 25 percent more than on the same date last year, the state statistics committee reported Friday (May 15).
Wheat stocks totalled 5.4 million tonnes, corn 2.5 million tonnes, barley 1.5 million tonnes and rye 400,000 tonnes.
Out of the total amount, farmers held stocks of 4.4 million tonnes of grain, 1.7 times the amount held a year ago, including 1.7 million tonnes of wheat, 1.1 million tonnes of corn, 800,000 tonnes of barley and 100,000 tonnes of rye. The rest of the grain was held by grain storage and processing enterprises.
The increase in grain stocks is due to the large harvest in 2008. Ukraine harvested 53.3 million tonnes of grain in 2008 compared with 29 million tonnes in 2007.
