Mexico pork demand might need six months to recover
Mexico's pork demand and prices will probably need six months to recover from the 70-percent collapse seen in recent weeks due to AH1N1 flu, Mexico's Agriculture Minister Alberto Cardenas Jimenez said Thursday (May 14).
Jimenez called on the Mexican people to eat pork, as the World Health Organisation (WHO) said eating pork cannot spread the disease, which has killed 64 people and infected 2,656 in Mexico.
Mexico is among the world's top 10 pork producers. The Mexicans typically consume around 14 kilogrammes of pork per capita each year, compared with up to 60 kilogrammes for Spain and Germany.
