BPEX newly published report to help boost pork sales
A new report by the British Pig Executive (BPEX) in the UK aims to perk pork sales to foodservice and catering industry.
The report entitled "Pork in Foodservice" is part of the strategy by BPEX will help processors market and find new outlets for pig meat in the catering sector.
The report has highlighted factors improve the image of pork based on its survey from chefs and food service outlets such as the Defence Ministry, schools and hospitals.
Though pork is a regular staple, BPEX said other products such as bacon, gammon, and sausages were not highly popular.
Tony Goodger, the foodservice trade sector manage for BPEX, said a thorough promotion for pork on menus through niche markets such as area or origin, not just country of origin, and also how the pork had been produced is needed, adding that the industry needs to produce new recipes to endorse pork "as meal for any occasion or as an indulgence".
Goodger stressed the health and animal welfare of consuming pork must also be emphasised.
BPEX is now compiling a list of major players and contacts for the processing industry to help manufacturers expand into the sector and in October this year there will be a series of seminars for producers, processors and caterers to develop pork sales and knowledge of the market needs.
