China to keep pork supply stable in Hong Kong
China will increase pork exports to Hong Kong to prevent pork shortage in the wake of the May 12 earthquake.
Sichuan exported more than 8,200 tonnes of pork between January to April this year, and the majority went to Hong Kong.
The May 12 earthquake caused disruptions in hog-rearing and hog-processing activities in Sichuan. Transportation woes are also expected as roads and railways were destroyed. Inevitably, hog supply from Sichuan to Hong Kong will be very much affected.
To ensure stability in Hong Kong's pork market, China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine will arrange an additional 400-500 tonnes of pork to be exported to Hong Kong every month. The pork will come from provinces like Hebei, Guangdong, Henan, Anhui, Shandong and so on.
