Germany to discontinue use of battery cages in two years
Half of the German layer flock would be housed in barn or free-range systems in two years time and the other half would be houses in small group systems, according to the German Farmers' Union (DBV).
Battery cages are being outlawed in Germany
Current users of battery cages are required to sign a declaration promising to convert to other systems by 2009.
At least 30 percent of Germany's national flock is already in barn or free-range systems.
DBV also said that now that German producers have provided better conditions for their flocks, German consumers would have to fulfill their end of the bargain by buying German eggs so as to sustain the industry.
The union added that the consumer would have to decide whether a sustainable and animal welfare friendly livestock sector can remain and grow in Germany, or whether production would have to be moved abroad.
