China needs to enhance local agricultural sector

China urgently needs to improve its agricultural modernisation to keep it at par with other industries, warned an expert from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the government research institute.

He Chuanqi, director of the China Center for Modernization Research under the CAS, made his remarks at a press conference on agricultural modernisation held in Beijing Sunday (May 13).

The yields of grain, rice and wheat in China in 2008 had reached the same level as in developed countries. However, China's agricultural labour productivity was about 47% of the world's average, and just 1% of that in the US, the People's Daily reported He as saying.
