Strategie Grains revises 2009-10 wheat output on dryness

Strategie Grains trimmed European Union 2009-10 forecast soft wheat production on Thursday (May 14) to 128.9 million tonnes due to dry weather in eastern Europe damaging yields.

The French analytical firm had pegged EU soft wheat production at 130.6 million tonnes in its April report but said subsequent dry conditions in Poland, Hungary and Romania had led to the 1.7 million tonne revision.

This compares with 2008-09 soft wheat production of 140 million tonnes.

Total 2009-10 grain production was also revised down to 289.7 million tonnes, from April's estimate of 294.2 million tonnes, and down 7 percent on the year.

However, the report noted its estimates were subject to change during the coming month or two - a crucial period for crop development.

"Effectively, conditions in the second half of May and through June will be decisive in determining final yields," said the report.
