Thailand food exports seen strong this year
While Thailand's food exports are expected to perform well this year, driven by shipments of frozen meat products and processed fruits and vegetables, officials said.
Thailand's food exports this year are expected to reach THB780 billion (US$22.6 billion), supported by frozen processed chicken and frozen shrimp.
Thai food is still globally acceptable and demanded by consumers despite the economic crisis, according to Rachane Potjanasuntorn, director-general of the Export Promotion Department.
Despite exporters'concerns of the baht's continuous appreciation, Thai food exports are expected to remain competitive due to improved food safety and traceability, Rachane said.
The AH1N1 flu may have affected Thailand's pork consumption, but little impact on the industry is expected, he said.
Also, the AH1N1 flu may prompt more consumers to opt for more seafood consumption both in Thailand and overseas, which could boost Thai seafood exports, said Thawee Piyapatana, managing director of Pacific Fish Processing Co.
But Betagro Group executive vice-president, Nopporn Vayuchote, said it would take about six months for the Thai pig and poultry industries to return to normal if no further crises hit the local economy.
