US consumers trust meat sold in grocery stores

About 90 percent of US consumers trust that the meat sold in their grocery store is safe, according to the Food Marketing Institutes's (FMI) US Grocery Shopper Trends 2008 report.

However, consumers expressed less trust in the government, as 79 percent said they trust the USDA to ensure food safety while 76 percent hold this view on the Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

The report also said 41 percent of consumers are very concerned about the nutritional content of the food they eat, with more than half checking on saturated fat, trans fat and total fat on the Nutrition Facts label.
