Philippines to produce more corn in 2007
Despite adverse weather conditions, Philippine corn production is expected to reach 2.73 million tonnes in 2007, up five percent from 2.6 million tonnes last year, according to the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics.
The government seeks to raise production this year by expanding corn and rice planting areas.
Meanwhile, the Department of Agriculture would try to prepare required infrastructure and post-harvest facilities, including dryers and storage areas, before the rainy season arrives, said Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap.
In particular, the higher corn output is seen to come mainly from the Cagayan Valley, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), Caraga and Ilocos regions.
Domestic corn harvest area is seen to reach 1.06 million hectares by June, up 4.7 percent from 1.01 million hectares last year, the bureau added.
Corn harvest area and output for Q3 2007 are expected to rise 3.8 percent and 4.1 percent on-year respectively.
