Smaller wheat crop expected for Virgina, US

Virgina's 2010 wheat production is expected to decline by 9% from last year.

The National Agriculture Statistics Services predicts wheat production in Virginia to total 11 million bushels. The state produced 12.2 million bushels in 2009. The agency's initial season forecast said 175,000 acres of wheat, with an average yield of 63 bushels per acre, are expected to be harvested this year.

Majority of the state's wheat crop was in fair condition as of early May, according to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
