Canadian firm releases new feed enzyme product

A new feed enzyme product particularly for piglets and young poultry animals is now out in the market, its manufacturer, the Canadian Bio-Systems Inc., has announced.

CBS Inc., which manufactures a wide range of products used in feed, food, industrial and environmental applications, said the latest Superzyme feed enzyme series is capable of extracting higher nutritional value from animal feeds including corn, soybean meal, wheat, barley and distiller's dried grains with solubles (DDGS).

It said that based on swine trial data results, the average daily gain of newly weaned pigs fed with Superzyme improved by 11% and the feed conversion ratio improved by 15%.

Poultry trial data results also showed that body weight improved by 2.7% percent and feed conversion ratio (multi-carbohydrase vs. untreated control, using corn-soy diets) by 3.2%.

Dr. Bodgan Slominski, head of a research program in Western Canada that investigates the potential of novel feed ingredients, said the product, which is manufactured using the multi-carbohydrase technology, "adds value to feed, reduces potential waste and presents a new way to gain a competitive advantage and enhanced profitability".

"Multi-carbohydrase technology represents the leading-edge of our science-based knowledge on the most effective use of feed enzymes. It leverages what we have learned from many years of research to offer a much more comprehensive and sophisticated option than traditional approaches", he added.

CBS Inc. has funded pioneering research on multi-carbohydrase technology including key studies directed by Slominski as part of his program at the University of Manitoba. This research has been awarded for its innovativeness by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the National Research Council.

Rob Patterson, CBS Inc. director of technical services, sees a new wave of multi-carbohydrase technology products led by Superzyme, which he said would become widely available this year through expanded distribution in the US, Canada and other countries.
