Egyptian poultry sales hit by bird flu
Egypt's poultry industry has been losing about 10 million Egyptian pounds (£E) daily since the country announced a bird flu outbreak in February, according to local reports.
Fearing bird flu infections, domestic consumers suddenly stopped buying poultry.
Egyptians have traditionally consumed fresh chicken as the main source of animal protein, with daily consumption of about two million chickens.
Domestic beef and lamb prices have risen to £E38 and £E35 a kilogram respectively since the country's bird flu outbreak. Consequently, many Egyptians who were unable to afford the meats had to do without.
Egypt produces about 520,000 tonnes of red meat annually, importing an estimated 120,000 tonnes to help meet domestic demand.
