Egg surplus expected in West Australia's market

West Australia (WA) expects surplus of eggs in the local market, due to an increase in newborn chickens.

West Australian chicken producers are concerned about an oversupply of eggs in the next few months.

WA's largest producer said there would be an extra 240,000 eggs in the West Australian market this year.

There are currently 50 commercial egg producers in WA, ranging in size from 1,000 to 750,000 hens.

Managing director of AAA Eggs, Peter Bell said that producers in the eastern states might send excess product to WA, to prevent a surplus on their local markets. He was concerned that WA might be seen by some as a dumping ground for excess eggs.

The expected oversupply this year is caused by an increase in the number of newborn chickens.
