Brazil to boost aquaculture sector

Brazil's Fisheries and Aquaculture Ministry (MPA) is seeking to stimulate its aquaculture production across the country with the aims to create more jobs, better income and more food for the population.

As part of this strategy, the MPA passed resolutions to produce fish in three aquaculture parks in Ilha Solteira, San Pablo state.

To help develop fish-farming activities in these areas, the ministry will offer programmes of management, training, technical assistance and techniques in commercialisation.

The three aquaculture parks -  Sao Jose dos Dourados, Corrego da Anta and Corrego do Parobi, which are expected to have a production capacity of 11,300 tonnes of fish per year,  will be ceded free of charge to aquaculturists for a period of 20 years.

The park of Sao Jose dos Dourados includes 129 areas that will be able to produce up to 6,200 tonnes of fish, while Corrego da Anta, with 81 areas, will have the capacity to harvest 3,900 tonnes.

In Ilha Solteira, the MPA will also offer water areas for the launch of projects by legal entities or business owners. These areas are located in the aquaculture park of Ponte Pensa, in the municipality of Santa Fe do Sul, and will be granted to interested parties once payment is made for their use.

The government offers 16 areas of two hectares of water each, which will be able to produce 6,400 tonnes of fish per year.
