Indonesia eyes Brazilian meat as alternative
Indonesia is considering Brazil as an alternative meat supplier after the South American country offered its meat shipments at a price 30-percent cheaper compared to Australian meat.
Brazil could be an alternative meat supplier to Indonesia, the National Meat Processor Association said.
Indonesia has always been in a weak bargaining position facing Australian suppliers, said Haniwar Syarif, Executive Director of the Association.
The free trade agreement (FTA) with Australia will have no significant effect to reduce the prices to be paid by Indonesia's consumers, Haniwar said.
He said the government allows meat imports from any country including Brazil, which is free from the foot-and-mouth disease.
