EU soft wheat export licenses rise 397,000 tonnes on week
The European Union granted export licenses for 397,000 tonnes of wheat for the week ended May 5, data published Friday (May 8) showed.
This takes total wheat exports 45 weeks into the 2008-09 marketing year to 18.8 million tonnes, compared with 7.6 million tonnes over the same period the previous year, when the harvest was smaller.
Total grain exports 45 weeks into the year were 26.7 million tonnes, up sharply from 16.1 million tonnes over the same period the previous year.
EU wheat imports increased 47,000 tonnes on the week to take the 2008-09 total to 5.5 million tonnes thus far, compared with 4.4 million tonnes for the same period the previous year.
Total imports 45 weeks into the 2008-09 marketing year are substantially lower than the previous year at 10.1 million tonnes, compared with 24 million tonnes, due to a record crop.
