FDA limits hydrogen peroxide use in aquaculture to one drug

The FDA has announced the removal of hydrogen peroxide from the list of low regulatory priority aquaculture drugs, replacing it with an approved drug.

The agency had previously voiced no objections to the use of hydrogen peroxide to control fungi on all species and life stages of fish.

Now the only way to use hydrogen peroxide is through an FDA-approved new animal drug with the trade name 35-percent PEROX-AID.

The agency said aquaculture producers raising fish for human food consumption should not use drug compounds other than the approved product.

The FDA is also reminding producers to read veterinary drug instructions carefully to avoid having illegal residues in their products.
