South Africa's 2007/08 corn harvest rises to 128,000 tonnes

 

 

South Africa's corn yields for the new 2007/08 season came in at 128,000 tonnes last week, the South African Grain Information Service (SAGIS) said on Wednesday (May 9).

 

South African farmers harvest corn each year from about April to early August, with the key harvest months being June and July.

 

This season's yields are estimated to reach 6.96 million tonnes, according to the latest forecast by the Department of Agriculture's Crop Estimates Committee.

 

The country's wheat yields for the 2006/07 season rose by 1,795 tonnes last week to 2.019 million tonnes, the SAGIS' weekly harvest report showed.

 

The South Africa's Crop Estimates Committee pegged its production forecast for the 2006/07 season at 2.122 million tonnes.
