Russia shifts from importer to major grain exporter

Russia has for the first time shifted from a grain importer to becoming the third largest grain exporter in the world, Vladimir Putin said Thursday.

Currently, Russia ranks second or third in grain shipments, leveling with Canada, Putin announced.

Russia's agriculture ministry expects to export some 15 million tonnes of grain this year.
