Ghana to boost self-sufficiency with agriculture programmes

In an attempt to increase self-sufficiency, Ghana is starting programmes to encourage investment in agriculture, the country's President said Thursday (May 7).

"We are encouraging investors to go into agriculture," John Evans Atta Mills told an investment seminar at Chatham House in London.

Mills said his government, elected in January this year, is reinstating the "youth in agriculture" programme, which will give rural youth loans and credit to engage in agriculture.

Food security has become an important focus in Africa after food shortages and rising prices last year caused riots across the continent, sparking concerns over political and economic stability.
