Vietnam 2009 corn output forecast up at 4.8 million tonnes
Due to high demand from the Vietnamese feed industry, the US Department of Agriculture forecasts Vietnam's corn production at 4.8 million tonnes thanks to both better yield and larger planted area.
The country's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development states that Vietnam has produced 4.5 million tonnes of corn in 2008, posting an increase of almost 8 percent from 2007. The planted area for 2008 increased by a little over six percent, but the average yield only saw one percent increase. USDA forecasts this year's Vietnamese corn imports to increase to around 700,000 tonnes in response to strong demands. On the other hand, corn imports from the US should reach 25,000 tonnes due to strong competition from India and Argentina.
