Canada exports biggest cattle stock since 2003
The Canadian Beef Breeds Council and the Canadian Livestock Genetics Association announced that Alta Exports International has shipped Canada's largest breeding stock from Quebec of almost 2,000 Canadian purebred cattle to Russia.
Consisting of 975 Holstein dairy cattle and 1,000 Black Angus beef cattle, the sale marks a significant step to Canada's cattle breeding sector from its embargo in foreign markets following an outbreak of bovine spongiform encephalopathy in May 2003.
The cattle, valued at $6.7 million, are destined for two private companies in Russia which aims to revitalize its beef and dairy industries.
