VFF calls for investigation on beef company's expansion

The Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) wants the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to investigate the expansion of the world's largest beef company in Australia.

Brazilian-owned JBS Swift now owns over 10 abbatoirs and five feedlots in Australia.

Michael McCormack, from the VFF's livestock group, said farmers are worried less competition will mean lower prices at saleyards.

"I'd like to call on the ACCC as the regulatory body to just keep an eye on this consolidation and to make sure that we still have some competition in the marketplace," he said. He believes the marketplace is what drives prices.
