Ukraine 2008-09 grain exports reach record 21.4 million tonnes
Ukrainian grain exports by far have jumped to a record 21.416 million tonnes in the 2008-09 season from 1.795 million in the same period in 2007-08 when grain sales were subject to restrictions, analysts said on Wednesday (May 6).
UkrAgroConsult consultancy said in a report that wheat exports surged to 10.692 million tonnes from 270,814, while exports of barley jumped to 5.746 million from 373,909 tonnes in 2007-08. Corn sales rose to 4.261 million tonnes from 653,606.
It also said exports in April totalled 2.277 million tonnes compared with 2.457 million in March and against 357,737 tonnes in April 2008.
Ukraine harvested a record 53.3 million tonnes of grain in 2008 against 29.3 million in 2007.
The farm ministry has forecast exports at 25.0-25.5 million tonnes in the 2008-09 season compared with 4 million in 2007-08.
