Vietnam assures seafood raised in Mekong River safe

The National Agro-forestry and Fisheries Quality Assurance Department (NAFIQAD) has confirmed seafood raised in Mekong River is safe.

Analysis released by the Centre of Environmental Monitoring showed that the criteria for water quality such as pH, purity, DO, H2S and Nitrite lie in acceptable threshold and the river is therefore suitable for fish rearing in freshwater environment. Microbiological analysing results of E.Coli, Coliform reached B level, hence seafood is allowed to be harvested and exported to the EU, US and Australia.

The report confirmed that water in Mekong River has not yet been polluted and seafood raised in the area meet regulations of food safety and hygiene.

The programme on monitoring environment in the Mekong River Basin at upstream, midstream and downstream segments was conducted four times a year by the Centre for Environmental Monitoring under the Research Institute for Aquaculture.

The report came in response to recent questions regarding the quality of tra fish products farmed in the Mekong River.
