Ghana researchers recommend new poultry feed enhancer

A team from researchers from Ghana's Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has recommended a new poultry feed enhancer to poultry farmers to improve poultry performance.

The researchers conducted studies using a livestock performance enhancer known as 3rd Generation Ruman-Enhance (RE3), manufactured by Canada's Basic Environmental Systems and Technology Incorporated (BEST) and approved by the Food and Drugs Board of Ghana.

The study found that all ingredients used in the preparation of RE3 were from natural sources and remained in their natural state, according to Professor S. A. Osei of KNUST.

No toxic chemicals were found to have been used in RE3, which contained yeast that produced acid to fight any plague that might attack the birds.

When added into broiler and layer feed, RE3 could improve egg laying and body weight, Osei said.

Replacing antibiotics with RE3 would also save about US$485 per 1,000 layers, said Professor O.B. Okai.
