Food producer Zito opens automated pig farm in Osijek, Croatia, with US$8 million investment
Croatian food producer Zito Group has opened a new fully-automated pig farm in Osijek, Croatia, following an investment of almost €7 million ($8 million), it said on April 30.
This investment is part of a long-term plan to increase pig production, co-financed through the European Fund for Rural Development, Zito said in a press release.
The Klisa pig farm spreads on 4,751 square meters and uses cutting-edge technology of video surveillance, automatic feeding, and ventilation systems. It was built next to a biogas plant, with waste from the farm used to produce electricity and thermal energy from the biogas plant used to heat the farm.
As part of the new investment, a liquid feeding system was installed, which enables food to be mixed on the farm itself using raw materials from the surrounding fields, thus achieving higher efficiency and savings.
The capacity of the farm is 9,000 pigs and its expected annual production is 25,200 pigs.
Currently, Zito produces 175,000 pigs per year.
