Vietnam fisheries output rose 5% in Jan-Apr
Vietnam harvested an estimated fisheries output of 1.448 million tonnes in the first four months of this year, making a slight rise of 4.95% from previous year, according to the General Statistics Office.
The total volume included 638,900 tonnes from aquaculture farms, up 5.3% and 809,100 tonnes from fishing vessels, up 4.6% from previous year.
In April, the country harvested 380,300 tonnes, including 91,700 tonnes of fish and 38,600 tonnes of shrimp, making on-year rises of 6.5% and 8.4%, respectively, from the same month of last year.
But the office said prolonged hot weather causing salinity intrusion and drought has damaged shrimp ponds in the Mekong Delta, adding that 10,361 hectares, or 9.3% of total shrimp area, in Bac Lieu province are infected with diseases. The figures in Kien Giang is 9,400 hectares, or 13.4%; Quang Nam, 500 hectares or 455%, and Phu Yen, 400 hectares, or 76%.
