In the first quarter of 2008, prices for imported meat products have increased by 73.2 percent on-year, according to Ukraine's State Statistics Committee.

Imported pork prices went up 90 percent, imported beef rose by 30 percent while poultry increased by 40 percent.

Ukraine imports meat mainly from Brazil and the EU, which accounts for about 30 percent and over 54 percent respectively, according to the Ukrainian Club of Agrarian Business (UCAB).

The UCAB has observed that livestock products export volume has dropped by nearly 41 percent in live weight and by 38 percent in the first quarter in 2008 on-year.

In addition, price increases for raw materials have caused Ukrainian meat production to become more expensive. Production of sausages grew by 7 percent; pork production by 15.7 percent; meat and byproducts of poultry by 47.5 percent in the first quarter of 2008 on-year.
