UK's Tesco receives Rotten Egg award

Major UK Supermarket, Tesco has been given the '2008 Rotten Egg Award by animal welfare activists for having failed to make any commitment to end the sale of eggs from caged hens.

Animal welfare activists Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) said the company failed to make any progress, despite many other global food companies having made efforts towards switching to free range eggs.

Meanwhile, the organisation praised other companies M&S, Waitrose and the Co-op that have made the switch through the CIWF Good Egg Awards.

Sainsbury's have committed to do so by 2010 and Morrisons is planning to go free-range on its own label shell eggs by 2010.
