South Korea to increase self-sufficiency pace of grains
The South Korean government has formally declared a plan to make sure there is a constant supply of major crops such as wheat, beans and corns in order to curb a food shortage that could be brought about by a hike in global grain prices.
The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is planning to encourage the use of machines in dry field farming for a rise in productivity. It will also increase the size of wheat farming land to 53,000 hectares.
The plan also includes creating a total of 120 farming facilities devoted to producing corns, beans and other grains.
By 2015, it is planning to raise the self-sufficiency rate of wheat to 10% through the measures.
