World Pork Expo: Where pigs strut their stuff

2012's World Pork Expo is scheduled for June 6th to 8th at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, Iowa, USA. Organised by the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC), the world's largest pork-specific trade show will feature more than 450 commercial exhibitors and is expected to attract approximately 20,000 visitors.

Besides staying abreast of the swine sector's newest products, services and technologies, highlights include junior showmen and swine breeders exhibiting their best market hogs and breeding animals. Breeding stock sales will commence at the start of the expo and continue into June 9th  until they are sold out.

Exhibitors include life sciences and pharmaceutical companies Bayer, Kemin Industries, Novartis and Pfizer; livestock production management company Big Dutchman Inc; waste solution company Biowaste Technologies Inc.; facilities and equipment providers Fancom, GRO Master, Hog Slat, Kunlong China and Vittetoe; heating solutions provider L.B. White and the Canadian Swine Exporters Association.

At the seminars, attendees can hear about the latest management information and industry insights at the Pork Academy. Additional business seminars on swine rearing profitability, hog health and current issues will be offered on Wednesday and Thursday.

Apart from the main event, pre-expo tours will acquaint visitors with the US Midwest's livestock, crops and agribusinesses. It is a combination of educational experience and tourism journey, with ample networking opportunities.

"Tour participants will have direct access to farm managers and agribusiness experts as they get to know fellow producers," says Bryan Humphreys, director of grassroots organization - LEADR (Legislative Education Action Development Resource), NPPC.

Participants can learn about the locks-and-dam system which allows agricultural products to traverse the Mississippi River to the rest of the world, and see modern pig production at Cinnamon Ridge Farms, with 4,000 acres of corn and soybeans, wean-to-finish swine facilities, meat processing facilities and a dairy.

Tour stops include one of the Midwest's largest food distribution companies, a feed mill for one of Christensen Farms' large pork-production facilities, Swine Genetics  International's boar-reproduction facility and Pioneer Hi-Bred, which respectively supply world-leading swine and feed crop genetics.
