Philippines sees stronger ties with Australia in agriculture
As the Philippines strives to modernise its agriculture and fishery sector, there is a need to expand trading relations with neighbours in the Asia Pacific, including Australia, said Philippine Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala.
Alcala said the partnership between the two countries "is a good template for sustainable agricultural growth and modernisation, and is going to be one of the most significant for the Philippines in the coming years."
In 2009, total trade of agricultural products between the Philippines and Australia reached US$292 million, while exports of various Australian agricultural products to the Philippines amounted to US$262 million.
"We now live in what they call a growing global village. Hence, we speak and deal with common goals and aspirations, shared risks and challenges, global opportunities and hope," Alcala said.
Alcala said stronger relations with Australia will allow both countries to take advantage of the expanding international commerce and trade industry.
