Exports, better profits drive calf trade in the UK

Demand for black and white bull calves in the UK has increased since the resumption of the live export trade this year following foot-and-mouth movement restrictions.

Auction market prices for Holstein Friesians in England and Wales have increased from GBP16 each head in January to GBP27 in March, according to the AHDB Meat Services economics department's analysis.

Beef calf prices also increased because of improved returns for finished beef. In the first quarter of 2008, Hereford cross bull calves averaged GBP99 a head, up 15 percent compared with 2007 levels.

Continental cross bull calves averaged GBP138 each head that period, up 5 percent compared with last year, reported AHDB Meat Services.

Trade for beef-bred heifer calves has moved upwards as well, with Hereford cross heifers growing 13 percent to GBP45 and Continental crosses averaging just below GBP100, up 17 percent on-year.
