India's poultry industry capable of handling future demand

Rising income, a larger population and urbanisation would provide the basis for increased demand for eggs and poultry meat in India, the Indian Poultry Science Association (IPSA) said.

He stressed that if the growth in egg production (at 6 percent currently) and meat (12 percent) production does not slacken, the Indian poultry industry should be able to handle the increased demand.

Egg production is currently at 2.6 million tonnes but demand is expected to surge to 6.3-12.1 million tonnes by 2020. Meanwhile, meat production, currently at 1.6 million tonnes, could rise to 9.5 million tonnes by then, IPSA president T S Johri said.
