India permits fresh cotton export

Indian Trade Minister Anand Sharma said Monday (Apr 30) that the country has decided to allow fresh cotton exports and will start the registration process for issuing export permits in a day or two.

"A decision has been taken to remove the suspension of cotton export registration. Registration of cotton exports will be allowed by the government," Sharma said after a ministerial panel's meeting.

The decision by the ministerial panel virtually removes all hurdles to exports of cotton from the world's second largest producer.

It had recently cleared some quantities for export after an investigation by state-run agencies due to suspicion that cotton was being stockpiled outside the country.
