US poultry production value, sales rise 3%
The combined production value from US broilers, eggs, turkeys and the value of sales from chickens in 2011 gained 3% to US$35.6 billion, up from US$34.7 billion in 2010.
This is according to the report of the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).
The combined total was comprised of 65% broilers, 21% eggs, 14% turkeys and less than 1% from chickens. The value of broilers produced during 2011 declined 2% from 2010 levels to US$23.2 billion, NASS said. The total number of broilers produced in 2011 was down slightly at 8.61 billion. The total amount of live weight broilers produced in 2011 was 49.7 billion pounds, up 1% from 2010.
The value of turkeys produced during 2011 jumped 14% to US$4.99 billion, up from the US$4.37 billion the previous year, according to NASS. Turkey production in 2011 totalled 7.32 billion pounds, up 3% from the 7.11 billion pounds produced in 2010.
The value of sales from chickens (excluding broilers) in 2011 was US$81.3 million, up 11% from US$73.1 million in 2010, NASS reported. The number of chickens sold in 2011 totalled 181 million, up 4% from the total sold during the previous year.
Value of all egg production in 2011 advanced 13% to US$7.37 billion, up from US$6.53 billion in 2010, NASS said. Egg production totalled 91.9 billion eggs, a slight increase from the 91.5 billion eggs produced in 2010.
