Indonesia advised to amend shrimp import policy
Indonesia has been advised to amend its shrimp import policy to avoid sanctions in anti-dumping import duty by the US.
A fishery observer said that Indonesia should ensure there is no transshipment of shrimp from producing countries that the US has imposed import sanctions on.
On the other hand, the US will make a sunset review reassessing the imposition of the anti-dumping import duty in mid 2008, said Sumpeno Putro, Regional Trade Advisor for the European Commission for Indonesia.
The sunset review will cover all shrimp exporting countries including Indonesia, said Putro.
In 2005, Indonesia was suspected of exporting shrimp originating from China, a country that the US has imposed dumping sanctions.
Indonesia could be hit with an anti-dumping import duty if it is unable to explain an increase in its export with an increase in production, said Putro.
