Nongbua farm uses pig waste to produce biogas
Nongbua pig farm's pig waste power plant and wastewater treatment facility has been certified by the UN climate change agency as a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project last month.
A THB 70 million (US$2.2 million) facility has been built to produce biogas from pig waste gotten from 15,000 pigs raised at the farm. Over 5,000 cubic metres of biogas are piped daily to a 1.4-megawatt power plant supplying electricity to the farm.
Excess electricity produced by the power plant is sold to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand.
The biogas power plant should enable the farm to save more than THB 12 million (US$378,340) per year in electricity costs, said Jantana Tangaromsuk, general manager of Nongbua Cogeneration.
