Peru continues partial ban on anchovy fishing
Peru has opened the fishing season for anchovy, used in the production of fishmeal. However, a ban remains in the areas between 0530 degrees south to 1130 degrees south because of the reduced number of immature anchovy fish, according to recent studies.
In 2004, 8.59 million tonnes of anchovies were caught, a 61 percent increase from 2003. Peru is the world's largest producer and exporter of fishmeal.
